The looping grooves that fans have come to expect from Kasabian, manifest in the track, “Underdog.” Indeed, even from the get-go, the band makes it clear that they can go soft, successfully.

And that is the whole point in “WRPLA”: Kasabian may have harnessed the big drum beats, yet they manage to puts the focus on the un-tempered vocals of Tom Meighan. This profundity and passion makes “WRPLA” more listenable than their previous outputs.

And it’s not that they’ve turned into a second-rate Coldplay either.

To wit: As “Fire” glows in the verse, Meighan makes sure it completely catches, well, fire in the chorus. The Bollywood-flavored “West Ryder Silver Bullet,” meanwhile, expands into a chorus of imposing fervor.

Then again, “Take Aim” is thoroughly stripped back, while the imperceptibly idyllic “Thick as Thieves” is The Kinks in everything but the name. So are they saying that quiet is the new loud?

What is sure is that this sophisticated sound is Kasabian’s musical direction. It’s the sound of past and future merging to first-class effect in the present – and could be Kasabian’s major declaration that they’re in for the long haul.

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum sold more than 150,000 copies in two weeks and topped the charts until knocked from the top spot by Michael Jackson.

The band, from Leicester, are due to release their new single Where Did All The Love Go? on August 10, as a follow-up to No 3 single Fire.

Daniel Parkin, 22, whose band, The Getaway Boys, started recording last week, said: “We’re really good mates with both bands and they’ve been giving us some recording tips.

“They’ve told us to keep things original, be true to ourselves and go our own route.”

The Getaway Boys describe their sound as “completely different from everyone else out there”. Daniel said: “It’s ballsy, indie rock – and each song almost represents a different genre.”

Also in the band are Daniel’s old friend Ste Pickering, 22, with whom he went to Belper School. They are joined by Nathan Tunnicliffe, 27, and drummer Dan Land, 18.

The Getaway Boys will open for Me My Head at The Royal, Derby, on Sunday. Also performing are The Praha Youth. Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are £5 in advance (14-plus only) on 01332 255800.

Henry Shipley, whose rousing Post Horn Gallop were a feature of City’s home games, died on June 20.

Henry, who was in his early 80s, first played the Post Horn Gallop at Filbert Street back in the early 1940s with the Home Guard Band.

His last performance at the old stadium was in 1957 before being asked to play at the Walkers stadium for the 2003/04 season.

Henry’s first match at the Walkers was a pre-season friendly against Barcelona, which he said was his favourite ever performance.

Leicester City club ambassador, Alan Birchenall, said: “It is extremely sad news. He will be remembered fondly by the club and by our supporters.

“He always received a huge ovation, not just when he was playing but also when he was here as a supporter.

“Henry auditioned for the role of playing the Post Horn Gallop and immediately stood out, with the full regalia and proper equipment.

“Sadly, he suffered from ill health in recent years, which is why he didn’t play at the stadium, but he still came along to games and his legacy will not be forgotten.”

Cliff Ginetta, chairman of the Leicester City Supporters’ Club, said it was a sad day for the club and all those associated with it.

He said: “I met Henry a few times and he was always a very nice chap. It’s very sad news.

“He was a bit of an icon and to play at his age is an achievement in itself.

” Leicester fans really appreciated what he did. He was part of the fabric of the club.

“The Post Horn Gallop is really the Leicester City song and he’ll always be remembered as the man who played it.”

Paul Hing, who currently performs the Post Horn Gallop, was tutored by Henry.

He said: “I’ve always seen him as a family member as he was godparent to my younger sister. Henry tutored me when I was a teenager, roughly 30 years ago and it’s such sad news.”

Season ticket holder Richard Champman, 22, of Aylestone, said: “It is quite sad. He was brilliant. I’m not sure about the new version they play now – it’s a bit too jazzed-up. Henry’s version was great.

Other fans have paid their respects on online using club messageboards.

Lou posted: “Terrible news, a true gent and city legend! RIP Henry.”

Henry’s funeral will take place next Thursday at St Peter and St Paul church in Syston, with the time to be confirmed.
